Choose the South Florida departure around the traveler
There is no single best South Florida airport for every Bahamas trip. A Palm Beach departure may suit a traveler beginning in Palm Beach County. Fort Lauderdale Executive can be practical from central Broward. Miami-Opa locka may better serve a Miami starting point. Aircraft position, departure time, international handling, parking, and the traveler’s ground drive also matter. Let the destination choose the aircraft
An executive turboprop is often a sensible category to examine first for a short South Florida to Bahamas mission. A light jet may better fit a longer origin, faster schedule, preferred cabin, onward leg, or live aircraft position. Some smaller island airports may make runway performance and baggage especially important.

Passports, entry, and customs
U.S. Customs and Border Protection states that U.S. citizens, including children, need a valid U.S. passport when entering or departing the United States by air. Requirements for other citizenships or personal circumstances vary and should be confirmed through current official guidance before travel.
The Bahamas’ private-aviation guidance says an arriving aircraft must first land at an Airport of Entry. It also lists procedures used by private pilots; a charter passenger should not assume those pilot instructions are the exact checklist for a commercial charter. The operating carrier and handler confirm the applicable passenger manifest, immigration, customs, arrival airport, and return-to-the-United-States process for the specific trip.
U.S. CBP requires advance passenger information for private aircraft and nonscheduled commercial operations crossing the U.S. border, and the operator must coordinate CBP permission to land before an inbound departure. Those are carrier and handler tasks, but travelers need to supply accurate information on time.
Confirm the current arrival form. The Bahamas began a limited digital arrival-card pilot in May 2026 for selected travelers and flights while paper forms remained in use. Do not rely on an old online checklist; ask the operating carrier what applies to the actual arrival.
Baggage, pets, and items that change the plan
Send a real packing list before the aircraft is selected. Include the number, dimensions, and approximate weight of suitcases; golf clubs; fishing or dive equipment; strollers; mobility devices; coolers; and pet carriers. A group can fit the published seat count and still exceed a compartment’s usable volume or the trip’s payload.
Pets require more lead time. Current USDA guidance says travelers should apply for a Bahamas import permit at least four weeks in advance, obtain the required veterinary health documentation, and separately confirm the carrier’s rules. Requirements can change, and the return journey has its own U.S. entry process.
Weather belongs in both the flight and travel plan
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. That does not make every date in the season unsuitable, but it does make flexibility, monitoring, and clear cancellation terms more valuable. Local thunderstorms, wind, visibility, runway conditions, and marine conditions can affect different parts of the itinerary even outside a named storm.
Build a day on the water with a flexible alternative. Keep a critical event away from the first possible arrival hour. If a boat transfer is essential, confirm how weather affects that transfer separately from the flight. The operating carrier makes the aviation decision; the captain, guide, property, or travel advisor should make the corresponding destination decision.
A five-day Bahamas rhythm
This is an itinerary framework, not a prescription for every island.
Day one: Arrive without rushing the destination
Land early enough to clear arrival procedures, complete the transfer, unpack, and let the first evening be simple. A strong first dinner and a sunset are more useful than forcing an excursion into a partial day.
Day two: Put the water first
Use the clearest forecast for a private boat day, snorkeling, fishing, diving, or exploring neighboring cays. The itinerary should reflect the island: Nassau can reach quieter water beyond the resorts; Exuma and the Abacos can make the boat the center of the entire stay.
Day three: Learn where you are
Leave space for the destination’s food, history, art, community, and landscape. In Nassau that might mean downtown and Bahamian history before dinner. On Great Exuma or in the Abacos, it may be a slower day divided between a settlement, beach, local lunch, and the property.
Day four: Choose depth over a checklist
Return to the water, arrange a private experience, spend the day at the villa, or explore one place properly. A second island is worthwhile only when the transfer improves the trip rather than consuming it.
Day five: Protect the departure
Leave adequate time for the transfer, outbound procedures, and weather. The best final morning is usually quiet and close to the departure path.
